Pest Control & Game Management

Ferrets. We keep a mixture of albino and sable ferrets in both sexes, males (Hobs) and females (jills). The ferret is used to enter rabbit or rat burrows in order to bolt them into nets or waiting guns in the case of rabbits or waiting terriers for the rats.

Locator and collar. The collars are attached to the ferrets so they can be located underground with the receiver box upto a depth of 8 feet. Used for when the rabbits sit tight and don't bolt. The ferret and rabbit are then located, dug down to with a spade where both animals are rescued and the rabbit is humanely despatched.

Purse nets. These nets purse up when the quarry enters them holding them captive until humanely despatched whilst still in the net or when removed. The mesh on the rabbit net is roughly 2" square while the mesh on a rat net is about 1" square.

Spades. The spade is used to dig to the ferret and rabbit and also to rescue the terrier when its gone to ground on a fox and showing no signs of surfacing. We always carry 2 spades, one to use and the other as a back up.

Ferret box. The box is used to house the ferret or ferrets dependant on size while out in the fields pursuing the quarry. The ferrets are bedded on hay which is changed for new dry hay on the journey home.

Terriers. We use a terrier to mark the rabbit warrens to let us know with their keen nose that the rabbits are at home. They are also used to ambush a bolting rat to despatch it with a tight bite and a quick shake. They still can be used to go to ground for foxes but this now has to be done on land where you are protecting game birds and with the landowners written permission. They are also excellent workers in hederows and brambles bolting rabbits to waiting guns.

Predator call. The electronic predator call is used to entice foxes into a safe range to be despatched by the centre fired rifle either through the day or at night with the use of a lamp. Mouth distress calls can also be used.

Lamp and battery. The lamp is used to search the fields at night for your quarry. A sweep from left to right and back again will give a reflection of your quarries eyes for you to identify and then calling it up or walking towards it to get in range for a safe shot. Coloured filters can be used for different occasions with the yellow filter being our favourite for the urban fox.

Rifles. We use the small bore .22 rim fire rifle on all our pest species except the fox and canada goose and only when they are on the ground with a safe back drop.
The .243 centre fire rifle is used for our deer management program along with controlling foxes mainly at night along with the predator call and lamp.
Shotguns. With shotguns being versatile they are used for just about all our pest species either walked up, flushed or enticed in with decoys.
